Living rooms cater for many needs. They are for relaxing and socialising listening to music and entertaining. They can also be used for eating and drinking watching TV and playing. Modern living room design tries to cater for the whole range of activities and making the most of the space we have often becomes a top priority when thinking about decorating and furnishing the room. The trend in modern living rooms is for a more open design - you need to look carefully at the quality of natural light in the room and how to supplement it with additional light sources. Wooden furniture with a natural finish is a good choice as it tends to lend a light and airy aspect to the furnishings as well as giving some much-needed warmth and character.
Multi Purpose. Some designs are set up so that the room can be a multi purpose room. There may be some consideration given to reading areas television and other media areas and even simple seating for eating in the space. These multi purpose designs are popular for small spaces especially in apartments. There are a lot of ways that these designs provision for separate areas. The areas can be divided up with the use of furniture or book cases and wall units. Many times soft walls are often used to divvy up the spaces. This type of design is the perfect solution for smaller homes that need the space to be multi functional.
The principles of feng shui dictate that you never place furniture close to the doors that are used to enter a living room. Even if you don't buy the whole Eastern philosophy thing this is a rule that really makes a lot of sense for an illusion of spaciousness. But you need to pick furniture that isn't overlarge. A medium-sized or compact sofa can seat people just as well as a larger example it can leave a lot of breathing room behind in the room. Not having a lot of space to lay out a living room never meant compromising on style. The style part is something that is purely up to you.
