You are of course always welcome to change the positioning around if you find that a certain arrangement isn't working for you. The only problem is that the larger the item the heavier it will be so you want to think hard and make certain you know exactly where you want something to go before you move it.
The way that you position these large scale items will determine not only how the room looks but also how it feels. Think about seating. If couches are all faced towards one another it will lead naturally to social interaction between the people in the room. If on the other hand they are all facing towards a focal point such as a TV it will direct the attention of the space outward. You should consider how you want the room to work and then move these larger pieces into place accordingly.
A living room is a good example. In this space you need places for people to sit. It's a basic requirement of the functions of the room. If people have nowhere to sit then it won't be a very social place. A table can also be added either a coffee table which can dominate the center of the room or smaller side tables where guests can rest a beverage or a bag or simply place their hands when reclining.
